We are the Kiwanis Club of Los Altos, a volunteer organization located in the heart of Silicon Valley. When we aren’t busy raising money for our scholarships and grants programs, you can find us giving back to Los Altos through community service. We meet every every Tuesday at noon. Join us!

To get you acquainted with us, here is a quick crash course in what the Kiwanis Club of Los Altos does on an annual basis.

We start off every year in October, after initiating a new president. This year our president is Howard Bischoff.

Throughout the year we host a K-Kids Club at Loyola School. K-Kids is a Kiwanis sponsored youth club which promotes community service for young children. Each year the students hold several drives (a toiletry drive for Community Services Agency, and an eyeglasses drive for an international organization). Our club also sponsors the Los Altos High School Key Club and Foothill College Circle K Club.

Also throughout the year we host Bunco fundraisers to help fund our annual scholarship recipients. Bunco is a dice game that takes no time to learn and is a load of fun!

We give back to the community through various community service projects. Earlier this year we helped refurbish some tables at a local school. We also provide turkeys for those in need come Thanksgiving time.

Every December we host our annual Kiwanis Tree Lot. This is where we make the bulk of our funds each year, as member of our club donate hours of volunteering to help run the lot and serve the lovely people of the Bay Area.

With our fundraising we give grants each year to local organizations. We usually  raise $30,000 each year and give back to the community in the form of grants (and scholarships, more on that soon), such as the Community Services Agency and the Community Health Awareness Council.

Each Spring we are very busy planning our biggest event: the Kiwanis Special Games. The Kiwanis Special games is a spectacular event that serves the needs of Santa Clara County disabled students through a day where they get to showcase and celebrate their abilities.

“If you ever wondered why you joined Kiwanis, come to the Special Games and you will find out!”

Usually the day after the Special Games the Kiwanis Club of Los Altos hosts the Los Altos Pet Parade in downtown Los Altos. This is a town heritage event that has been running for more than 60 years.

We meet every Tuesday in our Kiwanis Club House for weekly meetings where we have guests, such as El Camino Hospital CEO Tomi Ryba, below. The meetings typically feature someone from a local organization who gives us the skinny on local organizations or topics of interest.

And finally each year we celebrate all our hard work by honoring five local students with scholarships to Foothill or De Anza Colleges. This is a very special Tuesday meeting each year where we all feel our work was really worth something as we see the smiles on the faces of the recipients and feel we have helped change their lives in a significant way.

We also enjoy each other’s company as friends, whether at a social event or just grabbing dinner together. Kiwanis is a lovely group of dedicated people who love giving back to the community and meeting new people. We hope you’ll consider joining us for a Tuesday Lunch sometime soon, you are always welcome!
